Developing Your List’s Purpose (List Building Bootcamp)

Hello Divas! It’s the New Year and time to build your list. What list?

The list of people who have bought or will buy your product or service. This list is essential to your success as an online marketer and will become the lifeblood of your business if you build and work it.

Are you ready to get your list in shape? This four-part series will show you:

Part One: Developing Your List’s Purpose
Part Two: Strategies for Starting Your List from Scratch
Part Three: Strategies for Warming Up an Old List
Part Four: Dos and Don’ts of Working Your List

Let’s get started.

What does your audience want?

Each member of your list is a unique individual and in order to sell your product or service to someone, you’ll need to provide value for them in one of three ways: fulfill a need in their life or business, meet a desire, or solve a problem that is keeping them up at night. If you can tap into what drives their needs, desires and problems, you have a much better shot at converting these list members to buyers.

This will be an ongoing exercise as you learn more about your list, but it’s well worth it.

What value do you offer your list?

If you don’t have your value statement clearly articulated, why would anyone join your list?

This statement is the answer to a seemingly simple question – “What do you do?” If you can’t clearly answer that question, it’s time to get that value statement in shape. Your value statement can follow a very simple formula:

“I _________________ so that _________________.” This could be “I teach women how to work from home so that they can spend more time with their families.” In this example, you’re offering the value of “more time” and “money” by teaching. Notice that you aren’t selling anything in this statement. It’s all about the value!

Spend some time with this statement and you’ll see a clear reason for people to get on your list. All of the offers you’ll put on your website, emails, and ads should need to pass the value test. Does the offer measure up to the value statement you have developed for your business? Starting here will get you better results down the road. Guaranteed.

Determine your lead capture strategy.

You will need a hook to get someone to join your list. They will find your free, valuable content on the Web such as from a Facebook ad or blog post. This ad or blog post will link to a squeeze page (or landing page), which is a Web page where you offer something of value in exchange for their name and email address.

Going back to our value statement example, your value piece could be an in-depth video on how to find work at home opportunities or an e-book for building a home-based business. By trading their contact info for your valuable content, the individual is giving you permission to communicate with them.

In our next List Building Bootcamp post, we’ll go into more detail on list building strategy when you don’t have much of a list.

    Hello,

List building is definitely a great way to make a good living online if you do it right. I am in the first stage of list building myself. Too many people miss out on this opportunity to create a loyal following while marketing affiliate products and miss out on a lot of potential money.

I might have to grab a copy of your guide to help me along the way. I’ll check back soon to see what new advice you have for a new list builder like myself.
