Dos and Don’ts of Working Your List (List Building Boot Camp)

Hello Divas! We’ve covered a lot in our list building bootcamp this month, including defining your list’s purpose, how to start a list from scratch and how to revive an old list. Our month of training is almost over, but like any good bootcamp instructor, we want you to have the tools to succeed once you graduate.

Today, we’re going to give you the dos and don’ts of working your list.

Do give it your all and maintain proper form.

Just like those pushups and bicep curls, your list won’t benefit from half-hearted attempts at communication. You need to give each email your best. Consider each email a building block in the relationship with your audience.  When you’re writing, speak directly to the individual who is reading the email.

As far as form, be sure your audience knows why they are receiving your emails (in every message), give them an out (an unsubscribe link) and a way to contact you. Anything less is truly bad marketing form….and Divas are known for their stage presence.

Don’t miss a beat.

Missing opportunities to communicate with your list is like missing a workout. When you get lazy, you lose that top-of-mind focus. If you’ve ever skipped a workout, you know how much harder that next one will be. Make the commitment.

Do create a writing and sending schedule.

Those who are successful in exercise and online marketing have something in common – they block out time to produce their results. A workout schedule makes it easier to stay on track. An email schedule does the same thing. Just like athletes set aside days for building muscle and other days for strengthening their hearts, marketing divas set aside time to build their editorial calendars and do their research. And they schedule time to write and set up their emails.

Don’t miss the opportunity to target.

Weight lifters typically focus on a particular body part or two in each workout. This allows them to break down the muscles for improved strength. When you break your list into segments and focus your copy and offers on the members of that list segment, your results will be stronger.  For example, keep a separate list of prospects and buyers so that you can communicate appropriately. Often times, business owners make the mistake of always sending the same message to everyone.

Do set milestones for your list building.

Dieters set goals for their weight loss such as “lose one pound per week.” Runners set distance and speed goals to improve their performance. You can do the same for your list. Setting milestones for individual campaigns, growth and conversions will help you see your progress and in the long-term make more money.

Don’t overdo it.

As with any exercise program, you can overdo it and pay for it with unsubscribes and sore customers when you overwork your list. Be sure to give your list frequent communication, but always make sure you are providing value. Like your mom used to say, unless you have something nice to say, it’s better to keep your mouth shut. Our advice is to replace the word nice with valuable. You’ll never go wrong.

We hope you found this list building bootcamp helpful and that you gained value from it. Please tell us how we did in the comments. Until next time, keep working that list.

Good tips Diva’s. (I especially like the “stage presence” tip.) Thank you!
